Before trying any of the methods, first, create a restore point just in case something goes wrong.
Method 1: Run SFC and CHKDSK
Step 1: First, open the Command Prompt window of Admin by pressing the Windows Key + X.
Step 2: Now, type the following command on the Command Prompt Window and press enter.
sfc /scannow /offbootdir=c:\ /offwindir=c:\windows
Step 3: Wait for the above process to complete. After this, restart your PC.
Step 4: Now, run CHKDSK reference to this article:
Step 5: After completing the above process, again restart your PC.
Now, check for the updated. If the error is not coming, you are done. If the error exists, try the next method.
Methos 2: Run DISM (Deployment Image Servicing and Management)
Step 1: Open the Command Prompt window of Admin by pressing the Windows Key + X.
Step 2: Type the following command on cmd:
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Step 3: Wait for the DISM command to run and wait until it finishes.
Step 4: If the above command will not work, try these out:
Dism /Image:C:\offline /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:c:\test\mount\windows
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:c:\test\mount\windows /LimitAccess
Note: Replace the C drive in the above command with the location of your Windows.
Step 5: Restart your PC to save the changes.
After restarting the PC, again check for the Windows Update. If your error is still there, check out another method.
Method 3: Manually Reset Windows Update components
Step 1: Press Windows Key + X then select Command Prompt (Admin).
Step 2: Now, type the following command on the command prompt and press the enter after each command.
net stop bits
net stop wuauserv
net stop appidsvc
net stop cryptsvc
Step 3: After executing the above command, now you have to delete the qmgr*.dat files. For doing this, again open the command prompt and type the following commands:
Step 4: Again, type the following command into cmd and hit Enter:
cd /d %windir%\system32
Step 5: Now, you have to Reregister the BITS files and the Windows Update files. For doing this process, type each of the following commands one by one and press enter after each command.
Step 6: After entering all the above-mentioned commands, now you have to reset Winsock. For this, type
netsh winsock reset in the command prompt. Check the image below for reference.
Step 7: Now, you have to reset the BITS service and the Windows Update service to the default security descriptor.
Step 8: Again open the Command Prompt and start the Windows update services by typing the following commands:
net start bits
net start wuauserv
net start appidsvc
net start cryptsvc
Step 9: Reboot your PC and check the Windows update again. The Update Error 0x80080005 will not be coming now.
