Formatting a disk involves testing the disk and writing a new file system into the disk which enables the system to read the structure of DISK’S DIRECTORY (files and folders are organized on the disk).
How to Format an Existing Partition Using Disk Management
Simply follow some steps being described below along with the images to make sure that you are going on the right track.
Step 1: Use the Windows key + X keyboard shortcut to open the Power User menu and then select Disk Management seen on screen.
Step 2: Right-click the drive you want to format.
Tap-and-hold on the drive and choose Format… A “Format [drive letter]:” window should appear.
Step 3: Type a descriptive name.
Step 4: Select a file system from the drop-down menu. In the case of Windows 10, it’s recommended to use the NTFS (New Technology File System).
Step 5: On “Allocation unit size,” leave the Default option.
Step 6: Clear the Perform a quick format option.
Step 7: Unless necessary, you don’t need to check the Enable file and folder compression option.
Step 8 Click OK.
Step 9 Click OK on the warning message
HOW TO CREATE AND FORMAT A NEW PARTITION USING DISK MANAGEMENT
DISK MANAGEMENT – it is basically used to manage theinstalled in computer like a hard drive, flash drive, optical disk drives, nowadays its basic use is to make partitions in the disk, assign drive letters. In disk management, each drive is displayed by layout, type, file system, status, capacity, free space, fault tolerance and much more.
You can follow the below mention steps to format a hard drive without partition, using disk management
Step 1: Use the Windows key + X keyboard shortcut to open the Power User menu and select Disk Management option seen on your screen.
Step 2: Right-click the drive marked as “Unknown” and “Not Initialized,” and select Initialize Disk.
Step 3: Choose your style of partition i.e MBR or GPT
MBR (Master Boot Record) mainly used for driver whose size is smaller than
GPT (GUID Partition Table) mainly used for driver whose size is larger than 2TB
Step 4: Once you choose your style, simply right-click the Unallocated Space and select New Simple Volume.
Step 5: Click NEXT button.
Step 6: Select the default size if you are planning to use the entire drive for storing the files.
Step 7: Click NEXT.
Step 8: Select a driver from the drop-down menu and click on the NEXT BUTTON displayed on your screen.
Step 9: Select the NTFS (New Technology File System).
Step 10: Leave the default option on “Allocation Unit Size”
Step 11: Simply type the descriptive name and clear the Perform a quick format option
NOTE- DON’T CHECK THE ENABLE FILE FOLDER COMPRESSION OPTION UNLESS NECESSARY.
Step 12: Press the NEXT BUTTON.
Step 13: Press the FINISH button.
When all the steps are done completely your system is now formatted completely along with partition.
